ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2007-2008 READ OUT AT THE ATHLETIC MEET BY THE HONOURABLE PRINCIPAL OF THE SCHOOL, Sri J.K. ARORA


Honourable Chief Guest Sayyid Hilal Bin Badr Bin Ali Al-Busaidi, Wali of Sohar, Sultanate of Oman, Mr. Nassir Al Rahali, Deputy Director General, Sohar Development Office, respectable Members of the School Managing Committee, Members of the Sohar Indian Business Community, invited guests, parents, staff and students of the school, ladies and gentlemen!.

Firstly, on behalf of the Management, Staff and Students of the Indian School Sohar, I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said for his benevolence and generosity for fostering the growth and development of education of Indian children in Oman. We are grateful and honoured by the love, affection and hospitality of the citizens of our host country. I wish to welcome and thank our Chief Guest for taking out time from his busy schedule and honouring us with his presence.

It is with great pleasure that I stand before you to present the Annual Report of the various academic, sporting and co-curricular activities held in the school during the academic year 2007 - 08. Like the previous years, this year also our students have done outstandingly well.

This year also our students of Std. X and XII have given an impressive performance in the Board Examinations and have done the school proud.

The students of Std. X brought laurels to the school by their outstanding performance. Priyanka Mani stood first with 90.4%, Yunol Philip D’souza stood second with 89.2% and Siddharth Sadashiv stood third with 87%.

Our students of Std. XII also brought glory to their school. Chirag Pereira stood first with 87%, Shruti V. Natarajan stood second with 72.2% and Roshini Raj stood third with 70.4%.

Here I would like to mention the stellar performance put up by Subashree Sukanya Kannan who secured 99% in Mathematics, Yunol Philip D’souza and Siddharth Sadashiv who secured 95% each in social Science. The school is honouring these top scorers by awarding them with a gold medal each.

I sincerely thank our talented, experienced and dedicated staff for their guidance and support to all the students throughout the year for the all round development and growth of the students.

The school aims at drawing out what is best in the child through various co-curricular activities. Literary competitions like debating, elocution, declamation, essay writing, story telling in English and Hindi, drawing and colouring, handwriting competitions etc. were held throughout the year. General knowledge tests and quiz competitions were also conducted regularly.

The school has been on a continuous march of progress, since it commenced in 1982. From a single room with just 8 students, it has now two buildings with a strong increasing strength of 1540 students. To accommodate the increasing strength we have built 7 new rooms, which are now operational. We have even further plans of expansion as the School Managing Committee plans to acquire 10,000 sq.mts of land.

The school organised the Annual Exhibition on October 31st, 2007 in the school premises. Exhibits from different departments were displayed in an elegant way. Most of the exhibits were thought provoking and invoked the curiosity of the viewers. It brought out the hidden talents of the students.

The Green Olympiad Examination 2007, organised by the Energy and Resource Institute, Government of India was conducted on 29th September 2007, for the students of Std. VIII to X. 106 students participated in this examination and 9 of our students received merit certificates on national level.

Shashtra Pratibha contest was organised by the Science Forum Muscat on 7th October 2007 for the students of Std. V to XI. 86 students participated. We are proud to say that 3 or our students, Roshan Rasheed of Std. VI, Anush R of Std. IX and Neeraj Gopal of X were selected as Shastra Pratibha and 16 students secured A+ grade.

Global Achieve International Assessment was organised by the Australian Council for Educational Research on three consecutive days, 11th, 12th and 13th November 2007. The students were tested in English, Science and Mathematics from Std. III to XII. 9 students received distinction certificates on international level.

The National Level Science Talent search Examination 2008 was also organised by the Unified Council on 27th January 2008 for Std. III to XII. A total of 191 students participated. We are proud to say that Neeraj Gopal of Std. X secured All India Rank 185. Shreyas Gupta of Std. III got the certificate of appreciation.

Annual Pure Life Essay Contest 2007 was organised by National Heaters. Prizes were awarded on 15th January 2008. The awardees were K. Adeline Rowena – V A First Prize RO. 100/-, Krishnadev Vijay Kumar Pillai – IV C Second Prize RO. 75/-, Anmol Mira Sankar – IV A Third Prize RO. 50/-, Prashasti Nagpal- V A Consolation Prize RO. 15/, Anzar Ahmed Irshad Khan – V B Consolation Prize RO. 15/-, Archana C.M. – V B Consolation Prize RO. 15/-.

In the sporting activities also, our students have kept the school flag flying high. In the CBSE Oman Cluster Table Tennis, Badminton, Football and Basketball Tournaments our boys teams were the runners up.

In the Sports Festival organised at Indian School Al Wadi Al Kabir, our girls under 13 years team won the Run and shoot event. Mohammed Rashid of Std. VI was awarded the Best Athlete Trophy. Our school Boys Team under 13 years received the over all Champions Trophy.

In the Sports Fiesta held at Indian School Muscat on 14th and 15th November 2007 in which 7 schools from Oman and Dubai participated, our school cricket team emerged as the winner.

The school held its 16th Annual Athletic Meet on December 1st 2007 at the Sohar Sports Stadium. The event showcased the team spirit, coordination and dedication to duty of the students and the staff members. The spectators were enthralled to see the unique races by the tiny tots and spectacular display of mass drills. The highlight of the event was the breathtaking Gymnastics performance by the senior boys. The ring of fire was yet another testimony to their hard work and practice.

We are training our students in Scouts and Guides, so as to enable them to develop leadership qualities, learn human values and become better citizens. In this attempt 61 scouts and guides from our school attended the Annual Scouts and Guides Camp at Saham on 22nd and 23rd November 2007.

Fire fighting demonstration was also conducted by the Oman Poly Propylene Company on 6th August 2007 to train them in case of any emergency.

In our school various national festivals of Oman and India are celebrated with customary zeal and enthusiasm.

In order to accomplish better development of the students, Parent-Teacher meetings were organised periodically.

Picnics and Field Trips were arranged for the various classes at Al Hoota Caves, Muscat Museums, Nizwa Fort, Rustaq Fort and Hot Water Spring, Ostrich Park, Turtle Park and various industries and factories.

This academic year was made special by the visit of His Excellency Anil Wadhwa, the Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman, Mr. Kiran Ashar, Educational Cell, Management of Hindu Temple and Mr. Anil Khimji, Director, Khimji Ramdas on 8th October 2007. The Ambassador was impressed by the dedication of the staff and remarked that a high standard has been maintained in the school. The other eminent dignitaries who visited our school on various special occasions are Mr. Mohammed Ali Al Kishri, Director, Sohar Municipality, Mr. Mohammed Ismail Al Kamali, Director, Ministry of Sports, Sheikh Said Hamaid Al-Harthy, Naib Wali of Sohar, Mr. Darwish Hamdan Ali Al Farsi, Post Master, Oman Post, Sohar, Mrs. Naeema Mohd Ali Al Farsi, Branch Manager, Oman International Bank, Souq Branch, Sohar.

This year our school bid adieu to two important persons Mr. Ramesh Mathur, Educational Advisor, Board of Directors for the Indian Schools in Oman and Mr. S. Laxman, Co-ordinator Indian School Sohar. I would like to thank both of them for their help, cooperation and guidance they had given us.

Let me take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to the various persons who have helped us in smooth working of school.

I thank the Director of International Schools Office, and the officials of his Department at Muscat and Sohar for the permission for the various functions and approval for the appointment of new teachers.

I thank the Ministry of Manpower in getting the clearance for the appointments of new teachers, the Royal Oman Police, Sohar Municipality and Water & Electricity Departments for their excellent services.

The officials of the Indian Embassy have been very helpful to us. We thank them for their cooperation. We are grateful to the Board of Directors and Mr. Leo Lobo, the Principal of Indian School Al Wadi Al Kabir.

I thank the School Managing Committee of our School, for their wholehearted support and guidance in the smooth running of the school. Indeed the entire school is indebted to the devoted service of all the members of the School Managing Committee who are instrumental in the development of the school.

The School has got a well equipped Office with experienced and able staff to take care of the administration work. Without them the school cannot run smoothly. My appreciation goes to them too.

The school’s service staff are very sincere in their duties and help keep the campus clean. My thanks to them too.

My special blessings for the pupils for their team spirit, hard work and disciplined behaviour. I am extremely thankful to the parents for their excellent cooperation with the school.

Before I finish my report I would like to express our thanks to the following companies for providing free samples to the students for Annual Concert and Annual Day. They are
