We are pleased to inform you that Asha Integrated Group is organizing an Art Competition for classes VI to VIII on 14th August 2009. Selection for this competition will be held in the last week of July. The selected children will go for final to Muscat on 14th August 2009.
Theme: The theme will be Indo-Oman Friendship
Medium: Any medium may be used. Paints, colour pencils, crayons etc. Paper will be provided. Participants would be required to bring their own art materials.

Sub: IGNITE: 2009: A Nation wide Campaign to harness the creative and innovative spirit of school children by National Innovation Foundation (NIF) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)

We wish to inform you that CBSE has planned to initiate IGNITE 2009 in collaboration with NIF to harness the creative and innovative talents of school children. Interested students of classes VIII to XII are requested to submit their projects (original contributions and innovations) for the IGNITE 2009 competition as per the following categories.

1. Technological ideas to solve any problem in day to day life
2. Real life technological projects demonstrating innovative ways of solving problems or reducing drudgery or generating efficiency or conserving resources (projects demonstrating application of know scientific concepts or theories will not be accepted)
3. Traditional knowledge practices documented from elders in and around one’s family.
4. Information about some other innovators in the neighbourhood

Each entry should be accompanied with a certificate from parents saying that the idea/innovation has been developed and documented by the student concerned entirely on his/her own without any guidance or support from them. Students are requested to submit their printed entries on or before 13th August 2009 to Mrs. Alka Singh, Co-ordinator IGNITE also send a copy by email to inscohar@omantel.net.om with IGNITE 2009 in subject line.

ANNUAL REPORT 2008-09

ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2008-2009

Honourable Chief Guest­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ Mr. Abdulrahman Bin Salim Al Qasmi, Deputy Director General, Directorate General of Education – Al Batinah North, respectable Members of the School Managing Committee, Members of the Sohar Indian Business Community, invited guests, parents, staff and students of the school, ladies and gentlemen!

It is with great pleasure that I stand before you to present the Annual Report of the various academic, sporting and co-curricular activities held in the school during the last academic year. Like the previous years, this year also our students have done outstandingly well and are all set to leave a mark, whereever they go.

Firstly, on behalf of the Management, Staff and Students of the Indian School Sohar, I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said for his benevolence and generosity for fostering the growth and development of education of Indian children in Oman. We are grateful and honoured by the love, affection and hospitality of the citizens of our host country. I wish to welcome and thank our Chief Guest, Mr. Abdulrahman Bin Salim Al Qasmi for taking out time from his busy schedule and honouring us with his presence.

The students of Class X brought laurels to the school by their outstanding performance. Sanam Lakhwara stood first with 95%, Sameer Khan stood second with 93% and Radha S Sattam stood third with 92%.

Our students of Class XII also brought glory to the school. Mohammed Adnan Khan stood first with 83.8%, Saffin Mathew stood second with 82.2% and Apeksha Anil Joshi stood third with 79%.

Here I would like to mention the stellar performance put up by Sanam Lakhwara who secured 100% in Mathematics, 97% in Science & Technology and 96% in Hindi, and Nikita Mary Baby who secured 98% in Social Science. The school is honouring these top scorers by awarding them with a gold coin for each subject.

The students have gained guidance and support from our talented and experienced staff who have helped them throughout the year in their all round development and growth. They deserve to be applauded and thanked for their immense dedication and hard work.

Various workshops and training programmes for teachers were conducted under the guidance of Mr. Leo Lobo, Director – Academics throughout the year to enhance and refresh their teaching skills. With the increase in student strength some new teachers have joined our staff. Noteworthy is the appointment of Dr. Vinukumar, Vice-Principal. He is an M.Sc., B.Ed. Ph.D., and has teaching and administrative experience of 15 years in Army schools and other good schools.

Two of our students Sachin D S and Madhumita Unnikrishnan of Class XII have been selected for Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC) for Higher and Technical Studies in India organized by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Govt. of India through Embassy of India, Muscat.

Every child has some unique talent and capability in them. Keeping this philosophy in mind the school organizes various co-curricular activities.

Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research – Oslo’s Challenge – International Debate Competition was organised by the Indian Institute of Planning Management at Indian School Muscat. In this prestigious event all the Indian schools of Oman participated. One of our students, Sameer Khan was selected as the finalist and went to India to participate in this international debating competition on 5th and 6th of September 2008 at New Delhi.

In the Times of Oman Annual Quiz held on 17th April 2009, in Muscat, our school team gave some superb answers and took away the best school team runners up trophy.

The school organised its grand Annual Exhibition on 25th September 2008 in the school premises. Exhibits from different departments were displayed in an elegant way. Thought-provoking educational exhibits invoked the curiosity of the viewers and brought out the enormous talent of the students.

The Green Olympiad Examination 2008, organised by Tata Energy and Resource Institute (TERI), Government of India was conducted on 27th September 2008, for the students of Classes VIII to X. 20 students participated in this examination.

Shashtra Pratibha contest was organised by the Science India Forum Muscat on 30th October 2008, for the students of Classes V to XI. 150 students participated. We are proud to say that one of our students, Anush Ramsurath of Class X was selected as Shastra Pratibha and 12 students secured A+ grade. We are also proud to say our school was the top scorer in the Sub Senior category and is the proud recipient of the rolling trophy for second consecutive year.

The National Level Science Talent search Examination 2008, was organised by the Unified Council on 25th January 2009 for Classes III to XII. A total of 104 students participated. We are proud to say that Roshini Rasheed of Class III got the certificate of appreciation for her excellent performance. She was the school topper with a score of 62 out of 75 and all India rank 808. Her brother Roshin Rasheed of Class VII secured All India Rank 213 with a score of 76 out of 100 and Archana C.M. secured All India Rank 477 with a score of 74 out of 100.

The Times of Oman Open Essay Writing and Poster Making competition organized by Serve and Inspire Group in which various schools from the Al Batinah region participated was held in April 2008. 790 students participated making it a grand success.

The school conducted the Institute for Scholastic Evaluation (IFSE) Exam on 20th September 2008 for Maths and 28th September 2008 for English. In Mathematics a total of 137students participated. Archna C M and Leslie Monis of Class VI, Rohit R Namboothiry, Satvika Sati and Dhwani Pallav Rathod of Class IX were awarded gold medals for their excellent performance. In English a total of 112 students participated. Prashasthi Nagpal of Class VI, Roshin Rasheed of Class VII, Himanshu Sharma of ClassVIII, Sanam Lakhwara of Class XI, and Aravind Rajan of Class XI won gold medals for their outstanding performance.

The school conducted the Central Institute for Proficiency in English Language English Proficiency & General Knowledge Test and Global Science Talent Search examination on 4th and 5th January, 2009. Like the previous years this year also our students put up an excellent performance. In English Proficiency & General Knowledge Test 2008-09 for Classes III to XII, Anush Ramsurath of Class X, Archna C M and Danica D’Silva of ClassVI, and Maha Saruchi of ClassIV won gold medals for their brilliant performance.

In CIPEL’s Global Science Talent Search examination 2008-09 for Classes III to X, 86 students participated. Roshini Rasheed of Class III and Sandra Suresh of class VI received gold medals for their excellent performance.

Indian School Muscat organized a two-day inter school scholastic and cultural talent meet “ Jhankar Spectrum” on 15th and 16th October 2008. 12 schools participated in the event. Our school dominated the event by winning as many as 16 prizes in various competitions.

Environment Education Programme, ‘Our Treasure-Plants’ was held on 12th December, 2008. Out of the 136 entries from our school 14 entries were awarded ranks at the national level.

Annual Pure Life Essay Contest 2008 was organised by National Heaters in the school campus on 26th October 2008. The awardees were Linsha Ann Chacko Class VIII B First Prize of RO. 100/-, Rochelle Natasha Gomes Class VIII B Second Prize of RO. 75/-, Afshan Class VIII C Third Prize of RO. 50/-, Mohit Josson Kakkssery Class VII B Consolation Prize RO. 10/, Sayantan Mandal Class VII B Consolation Prize RO. 10/-, Sahil Ahmed Class VII C Consolation Prize RO. 10/-.

In the sporting activities also, our students have kept the school flag flying high. One of the biggest achievements in sports this year was that eight of our students qualified and participated in the CBSE National Athletics Meet 2008, held in Mehsana, Gujarat, India from 20th to 24th December 2008.

The school held its 17th Annual Athletic Meet on 12th November 2008 at the Sohar Sports Club. The event showcased the team spirit, coordination and dedication to duty of the students and the staff members. The spectators were enthralled to see the unique races by the tiny tots and spectacular display of mass drills. The highlight of the event was the breathtaking Gymnastics performance by the boys. The ring of fire was yet another testimony to their hard work, coordination and practice.

We are training our students in Scouts and Guides, so as to enable them to develop leadership qualities, learn human values and become better citizens. In this attempt 67 scouts and guides from our school attended the Annual Scouts and Guides Camp at Muladha on 29th and 30th January 2008. The students took part in the physical adventure test.

Keeping in view of teaching its students humanitarian values the school along with its students collected R.O. 861.120 for Flood Relief Donation for Bihar Flood Victims and sent the money to the Indian Embassy.

In our school various national festivals of Oman and India are celebrated with customary zeal and enthusiasm.

In order to accomplish better development of the students, Parent-Teacher meetings were organised periodically and special efforts were made to help the weak students.

Picnics and Field Trips were arranged for the various classes at Al Hoota Caves, Muscat Museums, Nizwa Fort, Rustaq Fort and Hot Water Spring, Ostrich Park, and various industries and factories.

I thank the Director of International Schools Office, and the officials of his Department at Muscat and Sohar for the permission for the various functions and approval for the appointment of new teachers.

I thank the Ministry of Manpower in getting the clearance for the appointments of new teachers, the Royal Oman Police, Sohar Municipality and Water & Electricity Departments for their excellent services.

The officials of the Indian Embassy have been very helpful to us. We thank them for their cooperation. We are grateful to the Board of Directors and Mr. Leo Lobo, Director – Academics, Indian School Al Wadi Al Kabir and Indian School Sohar for his continuous support advice and guidance.

I thank the School Managing Committee of our School, for their wholehearted support and guidance in the smooth running of the school. Indeed the entire school is indebted to the devoted service of all the members of the School Managing Committee who are instrumental in the development of the school.

The School has got a well equipped Office with experienced and able staff to take care of the administration work. Without them the school cannot run smoothly. My appreciation goes to them too.

The school’s service staff are very sincere in their duties and help keep the campus clean. My thanks to them too.

My special blessings for the pupils for their team spirit, hard work and disciplined behaviour. I am extremely thankful to the parents for their excellent cooperation with the school.

Before I finish my report I would like to express our thanks to the following companies for providing free samples to the students for Annual Concert and Annual Day. They are
