Dear Parent,

Sub: Providing Relief to People Affected by Floods in India

The Indian State of Bihar and eastern UP have been affected by unprecedented floods due to recent heavy rains. This has caused wide spread devastation - rendering millions homeless, without shelter, food and other amenities. The Indian Government has declared it as a `National Calamity’. There is an urgent need to provide relief and succour to alleviate the sufferings of people, affected by floods.

During these moments of calamity there is need for us to step forward to do our best as members of the schooling community and Indian Diaspora.

The School Managing Committee would therefore, request the parents, staff and well-wishers to provide financial support to carry out relief and rescue operations. A voluntary contribution for this noble cause will go a long way in alleviating the sufferings of people affected by the floods.

The contributions thus collected will be sent to the Indian Embassy for depositing the same in `Prime Minister’s Relief Fund”

With best wishes,

Haridas Jivraj Java
President
School Managing Committee

PS: For contributions of RO.1.000 and above, you may please obtain a printed money receipt from the fee counter. Contributions below RO. 1.000 may be dropped in the Donation Box kept at the School Reception. Thanks

Due to increasing strength, we are finding problem of parking during the opening and closing time of school. You will be glad to learn that construction of speed-breakers (humps) has been approved, and we shall shortly have them.
Please note the following:
School buses will be parked inside the school campus at Gate No. 4.
Other buses will be parked in front of the school Gate No. 1, 2, & 3. No cars or smaller vehicles will be parked there.
No vehicles will be parked across the road because that is hazardous, as students run across the road to reach their vehicle.

ANNUAL REPORT

ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2007-2008 READ OUT AT THE ATHLETIC MEET BY THE HONOURABLE PRINCIPAL OF THE SCHOOL, Sri J.K. ARORA

Honourable Chief Guest Sayyid Hilal Bin Badr Bin Ali Al-Busaidi, Wali of Sohar, Sultanate of Oman, Mr. Nassir Al Rahali, Deputy Director General, Sohar Development Office, respectable Members of the School Managing Committee, Members of the Sohar Indian Business Community, invited guests, parents, staff and students of the school, ladies and gentlemen!.

Firstly, on behalf of the Management, Staff and Students of the Indian School Sohar, I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said for his benevolence and generosity for fostering the growth and development of education of Indian children in Oman. We are grateful and honoured by the love, affection and hospitality of the citizens of our host country. I wish to welcome and thank our Chief Guest for taking out time from his busy schedule and honouring us with his presence.

It is with great pleasure that I stand before you to present the Annual Report of the various academic, sporting and co-curricular activities held in the school during the academic year 2007 - 08. Like the previous years, this year also our students have done outstandingly well.

This year also our students of Std. X and XII have given an impressive performance in the Board Examinations and have done the school proud.

The students of Std. X brought laurels to the school by their outstanding performance. Priyanka Mani stood first with 90.4%, Yunol Philip D’souza stood second with 89.2% and Siddharth Sadashiv stood third with 87%.

Our students of Std. XII also brought glory to their school. Chirag Pereira stood first with 87%, Shruti V. Natarajan stood second with 72.2% and Roshini Raj stood third with 70.4%.

Here I would like to mention the stellar performance put up by Subashree Sukanya Kannan who secured 99% in Mathematics, Yunol Philip D’souza and Siddharth Sadashiv who secured 95% each in social Science. The school is honouring these top scorers by awarding them with a gold medal each.

I sincerely thank our talented, experienced and dedicated staff for their guidance and support to all the students throughout the year for the all round development and growth of the students.

The school aims at drawing out what is best in the child through various co-curricular activities. Literary competitions like debating, elocution, declamation, essay writing, story telling in English and Hindi, drawing and colouring, handwriting competitions etc. were held throughout the year. General knowledge tests and quiz competitions were also conducted regularly.

The school has been on a continuous march of progress, since it commenced in 1982. From a single room with just 8 students, it has now two buildings with a strong increasing strength of 1540 students. To accommodate the increasing strength we have built 7 new rooms, which are now operational. We have even further plans of expansion as the School Managing Committee plans to acquire 10,000 sq.mts of land.

The school organised the Annual Exhibition on October 31st, 2007 in the school premises. Exhibits from different departments were displayed in an elegant way. Most of the exhibits were thought provoking and invoked the curiosity of the viewers. It brought out the hidden talents of the students.

The Green Olympiad Examination 2007, organised by the Energy and Resource Institute, Government of India was conducted on 29th September 2007, for the students of Std. VIII to X. 106 students participated in this examination and 9 of our students received merit certificates on national level.

Shashtra Pratibha contest was organised by the Science Forum Muscat on 7th October 2007 for the students of Std. V to XI. 86 students participated. We are proud to say that 3 or our students, Roshan Rasheed of Std. VI, Anush R of Std. IX and Neeraj Gopal of X were selected as Shastra Pratibha and 16 students secured A+ grade.

Global Achieve International Assessment was organised by the Australian Council for Educational Research on three consecutive days, 11th, 12th and 13th November 2007. The students were tested in English, Science and Mathematics from Std. III to XII. 9 students received distinction certificates on international level.

We are proud to say that Neeraj Gopal of Std. X secured All India Rank 185. Shreyas Gupta of Std. III got the certificate of appreciation.

The school held its 16th Annual Athletic Meet on December 1st 2007 at the Sohar Sports Stadium. The event showcased the team spirit, coordination and dedication to duty of the students and the staff members. The spectators were enthralled to see the unique races by the tiny tots and spectacular display of mass drills. The highlight of the event was the breathtaking Gymnastics performance by the senior boys. The ring of fire was yet another testimony to their hard work and practice.

We are training our students in Scouts and Guides, so as to enable them to develop leadership qualities, learn human values and become better citizens. In this attempt 61 scouts and guides from our school attended the Annual Scouts and Guides Camp at Saham on 22nd and 23rd November 2007.

Fire fighting demonstration was also conducted by the Oman Poly Propylene Company on 6th August 2007 to train them in case of any emergency.

In our school various national festivals of Oman and India are celebrated with customary zeal and enthusiasm.

In order to accomplish better development of the students, Parent-Teacher meetings were organised periodically.

I thank the Ministry of Manpower in getting the clearance for the appointments of new teachers, the Royal Oman Police, Sohar Municipality and Water & Electricity Departments for their excellent services.

The officials of the Indian Embassy have been very helpful to us. We thank them for their cooperation. We are grateful to the Board of Directors and Mr. Leo Lobo, the Principal of Indian School Al Wadi Al Kabir.

I thank the School Managing Committee of our School, for their wholehearted support and guidance in the smooth running of the school. Indeed the entire school is indebted to the devoted service of all the members of the School Managing Committee who are instrumental in the development of the school.

The School has got a well equipped Office with experienced and able staff to take care of the administration work. Without them the school cannot run smoothly. My appreciation goes to them too.

The school’s service staff are very sincere in their duties and help keep the campus clean. My thanks to them too.
