14th November 2011
Dear Parents,

You must have read the detailed report on the queries and suggestions from Parents and the response of the Management Committee on each of the points which was circulated on 17 October 2011. A number of Parents have appreciated and commended this interactive effort. To carry this further, we wish to present a status report expressing our views and the position on many of the points that some parents have sought clarifications.

Contrary to what is perceived that the School has not shown any progress in academics as well as co-curricular activities we wish to outline a few facts and figures.

The school has facilities for basketball, badminton, volleyball and table tennis on the campus. Students are taken outside to a bigger play ground for football, cricket and athletics. They are provided with adequate practice in all games and athletic activities. Our achievements in javelin throw, discuss throw, shot put and track events at Oman Cluster level and National level (India) are proof of the sufficient practice received by students.

3) TEACHERS:

We have quite a few teachers who have been with us for over 15 years. Those who have left us have done so for various reasons, for instance transfer of their spouses, education of their college-going children, settling down in their native land, etc. Our teachers’ profile-chart showing details of qualifications and experience will soon be put up on our school blog: www.indianschoolsohar.blogspot.com

When teachers leave us, we try and fill up the vacant positions as early as possible, even before the teacher has actually left.  At times, some teachers have to leave without giving us sufficient notice. In such conditions also, we try to get their replacements as early as possible. During such exigencies, we have to resort to local recruitment, but we do not compromise on their qualification and experience. Only  those candidates who fulfill the eligibility norms of qualification, training and experience are called for interview. They are interviewed by a panel comprising subject experts and educationists from Sohar and Muscat. Teaching positions are never left vacant for more than a few days. The Ministry of Education too has strict guidelines on teacher appointments and we adhere to these guidelines.

We have recently advertised for teachers in all editions of leading dailies in India and have received a significant number of applications. We will soon be organizing interviews at  major cities in India. We hope to recruit several good candidates.

4) ARABIC:

We have a qualified, trained and experienced Arabic Teacher from India. In order to provide first hand  awareness about Omani customs, culture and etiquette, an Omani staff who works as an Office Assistant in the school, takes a few lessons for middle school students on spoken Arabic, Omani Culture and etiquette. This is in addition to the regular classes taught by the regular Arabic Teacher.

5) LABORATORIES:

The school has well-equipped Science and Computer labs. To accommodate the growing strength, the classes are divided into batches and only a limited number of students go to the science labs at a time, in order to avoid crowding. In the Senior classes, students perform experiments regularly according to their syllabus set by the Board. In the Middle and Primary classes, students conduct or are shown experiments so as to integrate teaching with hands-on practice. Students also conduct projects and research. An annual exhibition in which students display their projects and models in science, social science and languages is held at the school. Students also participate in inter-school exhibitions that are held in Muscat.

6) HYGIENE:

The school has adequate number of cleaners for maintaining its cleanliness and hygienic conditions. This work has been contracted to professional cleaners. More cleaners have been added in the past four months to cope with the growing number of students. A lady janitor has been appointed recently to look after the girls toilets. Another lady janitor is expected to join shortly.

7) CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:

A host of co-curricular activities is organized in the school. A complete calendar of events is provided to your child in the student diary. A  number of individual, class-wise and inter-house competitions are also organized. To maintain a high standard, transparency and fair judgment, judges are invited from outside the school for judging the competitions. These judges are chosen on the basis of their qualification and interest in judging these events.

8) FUTURE PLANS:

The current use of portacabins for a few classes is a temporary arrangement. The school is also in the process of acquiring about   8300 sq.mts. of land adjacent to the existing school building. We shall be able to provide better facilities as soon as we complete the construction of more classrooms and a multipurpose hall there.

Our staff are putting in their best efforts to facilitate students develop into well-rounded personalities.

In this regard we welcome suggestions as well as criticisms from Parents and request you to communicate with the school authorities or any of the Management Committee Members. We can improve the school’s functioning when we receive your suggestions. We shall continue to strive to further improve in all areas so as to provide the best possible education to our children.

With best regards and appreciation of your co-operation,

 Dilip Asher
Convenor,
School Management Committee
